Praia do Forte contains Brazil’s main Sea Turtle nesting grounds. Four of the world’s seven species of sea turtle have been laying their eggs on the region’s beaches for thousands of years. The TAMAR Project, based at Praia do Forte, has been carrying out important monitoring work since 1980, when the most complete and modern visitors’ center in the country was set up. In addition to pools and aquaria where various types of marine animals are cared for, the Center also contains the Sea Turtle Museum and several stores and restaurants, making it one of the most popular attractions in Praia do Forte, fascinating old and young on a daily basis.

The TAMAR Praia do Forte Project spans an area of ten thousand square meters and covers an important segment of the region’s Atlantic Rainforest, which is also preserved and monitored by the Center’s professionals. Open daily, including Sundays and holidays, 9.00 am through 5:30 pm, the Project offers a series of activities and cultural programs for the local population and tourists visiting the site.

Located in a central part of the town, the Tamar Project Visitor Center is a leisure option providing information, close proximity and understanding of local flora and fauna, as well as generating increased environmental awareness among children and adults. An attraction for the whole family that adds value and a special charm to the town of Praia do Forte.

As well as being less than three kilometers from this very modern and complete Tamar Project visitors’ center, Iberostate Praia do Forte also hosts a Sea Turtle observation point, monitored and maintained by the staff of the Tamar Project, situated in the area of the Iberostate Villas. This initiative forms part of the activities for the preservation of nature carried out by the Iberostar Group, as it is located in one of the world’s most important Sea Turtle nesting grounds.
