Whale watching in the Dominican Republic

23 Feb 2015

Of the numerous activities usually on offer throughout the year, whale watching is one of the favorites among those spending their vacations on the island.

There are plenty of reasons to visit a place like the Dominican Republic, where you can enjoy an incredible array of tropical settings, historic cities, and various attractions that will truly enrich your stay.

Of the numerous activities usually on offer throughout the year, whale watching is one of the favorites among those spending their vacations on the island. Whale watching in the Dominican Republic is one of the most eagerly anticipated spectacles for many visitors, who make their way to the beautiful bay of Samaná to see the majestic passage of the colony of humpback whales. It is a natural sanctuary where many whales can be observed as they move around in an area covering 80 nautical miles off the north coast of the country.

For the best views, we suggest the continental shelf of the Banco de la Plata or the Banco de la Navidad, also known as the Santuario de Mamíferos Marinos (Marine Mammals Sanctuary). All of these spots provide excellent views. It should be mentioned that in the areas above there is a Whale Observation Center (Centro de Observación Terrestre de Ballenas), providing more seating capacity for tourists, who spend hours trying to capture the precise moment when the humpback whales parade through the sea. More than 3,000 humpback whales, which are more than 15 meters long, make their way across the bay.

The whale watching season begins around the first few weeks of the year and finishes at the end of March.

Whale watching is without doubt an amazing spectacle that provides the perfect final touch to an incredible vacation in the Dominican Republic.
