Tamar Project and Iberostate

The stretch making up the area of the Iberostar hotel complex (hotels and Iberostate) is called the “"spawning bag" because of the large concentration of sea turtle nesting sites of the loggerhead, hawksbill, olive ridley and green turtle species, along just 4 km of beach. As an Iberostate home owner, enjoy the special advantages and learn more about this wonder of nature that Iberostate offers you and your family.

The stretch making up the area of the Iberostar hotel complex (hotels and Iberostate) is called the “"spawning bag" because of the large concentration of sea turtle nesting sites of the loggerhead, hawksbill, olive ridley and green turtle species, along just 4 km of beach. During the last reproductive season, 488 eggs were registered and 29,809 young turtles were released into the ocean. Given how important this beach is for the survival of these animals, the Tamar Project depends on everyone's collaboration and the support of the complex management to reduce the threats that could interrupt the reproductive cycle of these turtles.

Inadequate artificial lighting, for example, scares away the females and makes it difficult for the young to head into the ocean. One single light can attract and kill hundreds of young turtles.  The vehicle traffic, such as quads, compacts the sands and compresses the nests. Also, these young turtles could get hit by these vehicles, which also scare away the female turtles during spawning.

The Núcleo de Monitoramento de Tartarugas Marinhas Iberostar (NMTM) (Sea Turtle Surveillance Center)  has a headquarters next to the golf course with offices and visitor's center. Come discover the mystery of the longevity of sea turtles. See up close what TAMAR has been doing for the last 30 years to protect these animals.
