From July to October 2015, Praia do Forte receives some very special visitors indeed. They are the humpback whales that arrive from Antarctica escaping from the cold waters to be welcomed by the warmth of the marine ecosystem of the northern coastline of the state of Bahía. During the period when these mammals gather and give birth at Praia do Forte, the Instituto Baleia Jubarte, located at the Bahía resort organizes “whale-spotting” trips to view the whales out at sea. During the activity visitors are able to witness the beautiful acrobatics of the whales, which can grow as long as 50 feet and weigh over 40 tons.   

Before setting off on the whale-spotting trip, the Instituto Baleia Jubarte gives educational talks on these animals, providing visitors with further information on their habits and details of their curious behavior. It is also possible to plan a visit to a museum dedicated to these whales.
