Saona Island is so beautiful that you won't believe it is real

The visit to Saona Island is the excursion that everyone recommends when they know you are going to the Dominican Republic. It truly is an almost-idyllic fairytale spot due to its landscapes and the clearness of its waters.

Saona Island, located to the extreme south east of the Dominican Republic, is the largest of the islands adjacent to Hispaniola and forms part of the Este National Park, serving as a sanctuary for several species of migratory birds. Its original name is "ADAMANAY", a primitive aboriginal name. It is presumed that on the second voyage of Christopher Columbus to the island of Hispaniola, he was accompanied by an Italian from Savona, a region in Italy.  It was this Italian who discovered the island, and Christopher Columbus wanted to baptize it in his honor with the name “Savona Island”. Over the years, the settlers on the island found the name difficult to pronounce and so they changed it to “Saona Island”.

Saona Island also has interesting caves, such as that of Cotubanamá, named in memory of the proud indigenous chief of the region who was captured by the Spanish conquistadors and executed in Santo Domingo.

It has a picturesque settlement called Mano Juan. This fishing village, with its pastel-colored wooden houses, is also a crafts center. On Saona Island you can stroll along endless deserted beaches with the finest white sand and crystal waters, surrounded by millions of coconut palms. You will also discover some caves that serve as a reminder of the presence of the native Taíno people; coral reefs that are perfect for diving; and breeding centers for fish and shellfish. With the name "Piscina Natural" (Natural Pool), it is an area of crystal-clear waters in which you can see countless species, including starfish, and birds such as the flamenco.
