Income from visitor spending is higher in Punta Cana than any other Caribbean destination

The Global Destination Cities Index, published by MasterCard, showed that Punta Cana is the destination with the highest income from tourist spending. This tells us that even though Punta Cana promotes “all-inclusive” hotels, visitors are still generating income, as reflected in the statistics.

The report states that the city of Lima receives the most foreign visitors in Latin America, with a total of 5.1 million people, and that Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, with 2.2 million visitors, has the highest spend per tourist. The figures show that the number of foreign tourists to Lima last year grew 4.1% compared to the previous report, published in 2013. Lima came ahead of Mexico City (2.57 million), Sao Paulo (2.51 million), Punta Cana (2.22 million), Buenos Aires (2.11 million) and San José (1.51 million).

As for tourist spending in the Latin America and Caribbean region, the city of Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic tops the list for the largest amount of money spent, estimated at $2.4 billion. In second place was the Brazilian city of São Paulo, with $2.3 billion, followed by Buenos Aires, with $2.2 billion, and Mexico City, with $2 billion. Lima, meanwhile, took $1.8 billion.
